GTA: San Andreas could have had three different maps

This October 2024, the legendary Grand Theft Auto: Sant Andreas celebrated its 20th anniversary. To mark the occasion, Obbe Vermeij, a former Rockstar Games dev who worked on the game, has disclosed a little secret.

Vermeij said on X.com that the vame could have had three different maps for the three different cities of San Andreas. As you might know, this was the case in GTA 1 and GTA 2 too. It was a decision tha tcould have dealed withe the PS2's limited bandwith and made it easier to add separate vehicles (police, ambulance, firefighters...) for each location, as well as "contain the player" from advancing too far on to the next town.

However, Obbe Vermeij, Leslie Benzies, Aaron Garbut, Adam Fowler and Alexander (Sandy) Roger decided in favor on a single map in a final meeting. Of course, this was done while retaining these specific police cars and the weather, which changed accordingly to the city too.
