The PlayStation 5 Pro could be a technological starting point to the PlayStation 6
, by Quentin
The PlayStation 6 may have needed the PlayStation 5 Pro to make the expected technological leap. Indeed, simply improving console performance using more powerful CPUs and GPUs is becoming increasingly complex and costly.
The PS5 Pro, which introduces machine learning to consoles, marks an important step for the future of hardware. Rather than doubling the power of the GPU as with the PS4 Pro, Sony relies on the PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR), an in-house scaler, which allows for more visual quality without significantly increasing component size or power.
Future consoles, such as the PlayStation 6, should follow this trend. The use of AI and machine learning would enable major technological advances without prohibitive costs.
Just as NVIDIA transformed PC gaming with DLSS and ray tracing, Sony hopes that these AI technologies will mature by the time the PlayStation 6 is released, allowing developers to fully take advantage of it.
