The AMD Ryzen Z2 extreme chips could feature just 8 cores
, by Quentin
We already know that AMD is working on a next-generation chip for portable gaming consoles, specifically a Ryzen Z2 Extreme.
However, there are many rumors on the subject. This chip should be based on the Zen 3 and RDNA 3.5 architecture, with a TDP of 28W. It would also use 64-bit memory, indicating that it would be based on Kraken or Strix Point, and would integrate 8 cores.
It's those famous 8 cores that are attracting a lot of attention, given that it wouldn't use the full 12-core Strix Point specification. Ryzen Z2 Extreme could focus more on graphics performance.
If this rumor proves true, even if the chip features only 8 CPU cores, graphics should still rely on full specifications with 16 RDNA 3.5 computing units, allowing for 1080p gaming, all probably complemented by LPDDR5X memory.
