Nintendo planned to launch a successor to the 3DS in 2015... which ended up becoming the Switch

One thing is clear. Designing a new console is no easy feat. It's not uncommon to see concepts dropped along the way, and that's exactly what happened at Nintendo a good decade ago.

According to a new video from the Rare Gaming Dump YouTube channel, the Japanese company was working on a new portable machine to follow 3DS's success. According to documents, its technical specifications were to be between those of the Wii U (whose GPU it would use) and the Switch as we know it.

Planned for the end of 2015, the console eventually evolved, and as early as 2014, Nintendo is said to have forked the project that would end up becoming the famos Switch. It was supposed to feature an oval design as in the image.
