The Steam version for Space Marine 2 uses an Epic Games client for cross-play purposes

When installing Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2 straight from Steam, many were surprised to see an Epic Games client appear. Fear not, as Focus Entertainmen has explained why.

It seems the Epic Online Services client is a must to allow cross-play between PC players and synchronize their friend list.

"However, please be aware linking your Steam and Epic accounts is not required to enjoy the game. These features are entirely optional and will not affect your gameplay experience in any way."

Whille all this is optional, that hasn't stopped many from expressing their displeasure, and the game has been review bombed on Steam.
