Despite Palworld's success, Pocketpair's next game won't be AAA
, by Thibaut
One of 2024 biggest surprises is, of course, Palworld. Almost seven months after launch, the game still has tens of thousands of daily players on Steam.
Recently, Takuro Mizobe, Pocketpair's CEO; was asked whether all the revenue generated by Palworld would make the company go for a bigger scale title. Going by his answer, the company isn't interested in that.
*"We first made Overdungeon, which did well, then Craftopia which also did well, and we used the profits from that to do Palworld.
"Although we don’t talk about it publicly, sales of Palworld are in the tens of billions of yen. If we were to develop our next game based on these proceeds, as we have done in the past, not only would the scale go beyond AAA, but we wouldn’t be able to keep up with this in terms of our organization’s maturity, or better put, we aren’t structured for something like that at all."
Mizobe also added that his teams aren't that attracted to the idea of creating a big-budget game, instead finding themselves more comfortable in the indie scene, doing more interesting things.
