Some 2013 Xbox Ones can no longer be updated
, by Thibaut
Those who own the very first Xbox One from November 2013 could be in for a nasty surprise whenever they turn their consoles back on. If it hasn't been updated in a while, it may fail to install the latest firmware.
This info comes from Digital Foundry, followin several reports from NeoGaf. They couldn't update three 2013 Xbox Ones that hadn't been used since 2017 and 2018, nor could they install the patch from an USB.
This is really troubling, as the console can't access any online features when it's not up to date. Xbox Live doesn't work properly, nor do the games purchased in digital format, as the console has to check the software licenses before launching them.
We also strongly advise against resetting the Xbox One, since it will revert to its original state and you won't get to update it. However, the Xbox One S and Xbox One X seem to still work properly.
