Digital Foundry explains why the PlayStation 5 can't deliver 8K games at 60 FPS
, by Quentin
As we already told you, Sony recently removed the “8K” logo from the PlayStation 5 boxes, and did so without giving any explanations as to why they did so. Digital Foundry has seized this opportunity to explain why the company's console is unable to handle such a high resolution.
The media experts explain that maintaining 8K resolution at 60 frames per second with HDR is literally not technically feasible. The system's HDMI output is limited to 32 gigabits per second, which is simply not enough.
However, they state that some compromises can be made, mostly through chrominance subsampling, which could reduce bandwidth without being that perceptible at high resolution, they argue.
They go further, pointing out that HDR would not be possible in 8K because it requires 10 bits per channel, as opposed to the 8 bits per channel from the PlayStation 5. What's more, it's currently pointless, given that no games are available in such resolutions, and the installed base of 8K TV sets is still pretty limited for now.
