This 2023, the video sector overtook gaming to become the UK's leading source of entertainment
, by Quentin
For the first time in 12 years, the gaming sector has been overtaken by the video sector in the country.
Gaming sales, encompassing video games, subscriptions and microtransactions, grew by 2.9% year-on-year to £4,736.7 million in 2023. However, video revenues were up 10% to £4,915.1 million, mainly thanks to platforms such as Netflix, Prime Video, Disney + and others.
The CEO of the ERA (Entertainment Retailers Association) explains this major change by stating:
"For a long time the only way to enjoy video digitally was illegally. Streaming changed all that and has transformed not just the viewing habits of tens of millions, but the fortunes of the entire movie and TV business."
