Obsidian gives us some background on Avowed

With a view to celebrating its 20th anniversary, Obsidian has decided to produce a series of features looking back at its long history. This week, the developers take a peek at the future as they discuss Avowed.

We learn, for example, that the title was originally intended to be played coop. In the end, the teams opted for a single-player, first-person RPG. Avowed will take elements from Pillars of Eternity (whose universe it shares), while creating a completely new experience that welcomes newcomers.

In Avowed, the emphasis will be on narrative, factions and characters.
