The memory shortage could worsen in 2027 and last through 2030

Two memory manufacturers are sounding the alarm! Indeed, the shortage, which is leading to a sharp spike in prices, is expected to continue in the coming months, or even years.
When announcing its financial results for the third quarter of 2026, Samsung reported revenue of $146.3 billion (up 14% from the previous quarter). Despite this financial success, the manufacturer also noted strong demand for its DDR5 technologies. Furthermore, its supply of HBM4 memory is already fully booked through 2027. As for NAND memory, it is reserved for AI-specific products. Simply put, the shortage will continue next year.
Worse still, South Korean manufacturer SK hynix has revealed that the global shortage we are currently experiencing could persist until 2030. Demand is expected to far exceed supply for at least the next three years. Prices will likely rise even further. For example, DRAM and HBM are effectively sold out through 2029, and while production is expanding rapidly, the new factories alone will not solve the problem. Finally, shipments of smartphones and PCs could decline further.
