Steam doesn't want to hide low-quality or AI-generated games

Steam’s Next Fest ended on October 26. For an entire week, Valve brought games into the spotlight, some of which were little-known to the general public. However, many studios criticized the promotion of certain types of games.

At the Steam Indie Connect event held this Tuesday in South Korea, two members of Steam’s sales team answered questions regarding the visibility of new games on the store. Indeed, it’s becoming increasingly difficult to promote these titles given the sheer number of new releases. Developers have also complained about the excessive presence of games using AI.

Valve has been quite clear on this matter, as the company has absolutely no intention of sidelining these games simply because they use this technology, which has been heavily criticized in the industry.

"We don’t want to be gatekeepers telling developers which tools they should or shouldn’t use."

Steam also doesn’t want to eliminate bad games or copies, but rather highlight quality titles by giving them greater visibility.

"We recognize that the trade-off is some low-quality games get exposed. We are fully aware of the situation, and a significant number of people are thinking about how to solve this problem.

We don’t think we’re perfect and there’s plenty of room for improvement. Rather than limiting developer access, making Steam a smarter and more dynamic platform is the starting point of our philosophy."

Thus, the company is instead looking for ways to propel promising games into the spotlight rather than trying to hide lower-quality titles.
