Sony could make significant improvements to haptic feedback with the PS6

While price is the main question on everyone’s mind regarding the PS6, Sony’s console is also expected to feature brand-new capabilities or improve upon certain features from the PS5. A recent patent filed by the Japanese company appears to highlight a desire to upgrade the haptic feedback of the future controller.

This document describes a system capable of analyzing and transforming in-game sound into different types of feedback and vibrations. The goal is to make the player more responsive in specific situations. For example, when an enemy is approaching, a sensory cue could be provided through the controller even before the enemy appears on screen.

The patent also mentions LEDs around the touchpad that would light up to indicate the direction of a sound. Icons, shapes, or even words could also appear on the screen. Finally, the haptic feedback would vary depending on the volume and characteristics of the sound. This system would operate directly through the PS6’s operating system or via a companion app that would allow these new features to be added to games already on the market.

Of course, a patent alone does not mean that a feature or product will necessarily be released.
