Shigeru Miyamoto is currently focusing on filmmaking

It’s hard to separate the image of Nintendo from that of Shigeru Miyamoto. Since joining the company in 1977, the Japanese director has helped create legendary franchises such as Super Mario Bros., The Legend of Zelda, Star Fox, and Pikmin.
This week, Miyamoto received Japan’s Order of Culture and spoke with Denfaminicogamer shortly afterward. During the interview, the 73-year-old creator revealed that he now wishes to devote himself fully to film production. However, he hasn’t ruled out working on a game again in the future.
"I don’t know what the future holds for me (laughs). For now, I’m fully immersed in filmmaking—I’m working with professionals, but I also want to see how far I can go on my own. And along the way, I might just try my hand at creating a video game again.
With the evolution of digital media, the work has become more complex, but at the same time, certain tasks can be completed more quickly. As long as I’m motivated, I want to experiment with different things, and since we’re talking about originality, I plan to do something unprecedented at Nintendo and surprise the employees."
As a reminder, Nintendo will release a live-action The Legend of Zelda movie in April 2027.
