With less than a month to go before the launch of Grand Theft Auto VI, the legendary franchise is celebrating the anniversary of the most important installment in its history this week. Indeed, GTA 3 is now 25 years old!
Released on October 22, 2001, in North America and then on October 26 of the same year in Europe, Grand Theft Auto III is the installment that marked the shift to the formula we know today. DMA Design (which would become Rockstar North in 2002) immersed us in an open-world Liberty City, modeled entirely in 3D. It was a real shock after the second game on the PS1, which still used the famous top-down view.
Here, the player once again takes on the role of a silent character named Claude Speed, who takes on a series of small criminal jobs as he roams Liberty City. In the PS2 era, the playground seemed immense and the possibilities nearly limitless within a highly vibrant environment. While Rockstar Games’ creation has now shown its age, it remains nonetheless foundational to the future of the entire series.
To celebrate its 10th anniversary, GTA III was re-released on mobile devices in an enhanced version in December 2011. A remaster was also released as part of the Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition compilation in November 2021.
Finally, GTA III is also one of the highest-rated games of all time, with a score of 97% on Metacritic.
