The XBOX Helix OS will indeed be based on Windows

We've been getting lots of information about Microsoft's upcoming consoles this week. For example, Fortune reported the launch of a portable device as early as late 2027 and a home console around the 2028 holiday season.

Furthermore, the article in question also highlighted internal disagreements at Xbox regarding the operating system for Project Helix. Two visions reportedly clashed. The Windows teams reportedly wanted to create a streamlined version of Windows 11 Home, while the Xbox teams favored a single OS designed to optimize gaming performance.

On X, Scott Van Vliet, the head of technology at Xbox, clarified the situation. He stated that “Helix OS is being built on Windows", and that that the XBOX and Windows teams are collaborating fully on the next generation of devices. In his view, the Fortune article "misrepresents both the technical work and the relationship between the teams."
