Riot Games announces the shutdown of League of Legends Classic, just 3 months after its release

League of Legends Classic is an official game mode created by Riot Games to let players relive the experience of the game’s early days, particularly Seasons 1 through 3. Launched in July 2026 as part of the hugely popular MOBA of the same name, the mode seemed destined for a bright future, but that clearly wasn’t what fate had in store for it.

As announced in a blog post by the developers, the mode is scheduled to shut down at the end of the current season, in January 2027. It will return from time to time as a temporary game mode, with numerous changes.

« We’ve seen that many players have enjoyed rediscovering Classic mode. However, most have now returned to other aspects of League of Legends. Classic mode will therefore remain available until the end of Season 3 and will conclude in January 2027. [...] We’ll share more information soon about the lessons we’ve learned from this experiment. In particular, we’ll discuss the strengths of Classic Mode, the areas where we could have prioritized authenticity more, and the situations where being too faithful to the past may have detracted from the experience. »

Following these statements, they clarified that players who spent money on cosmetics will be reimbursed in Riot Points, the game’s currency.
