Splash Damage almost bought Undead Labs (State of Decay 3)
, by Thibaut
Undead Labs managed to break free from XBOX's grip by regaining its independence this week. Unfortunately, the studio behind the State of Decay franchise had to lay off some of its staff to carry out this extremely costly operation.
Yet the developer’s future could have been very different. In fact, we’ve learned that the British company Splash Damage (Gears Tactics, Brink, Outcasters) was on the verge of acquiring Undead Labs as part of Microsoft’s restructuring. However, this acquisition, financed by the investment fund Emona Capital, fell through at the last minute.
Following this setback, the studio’s developers managed to regain control of their company and become fully independent. Development of State of Decay 3 continues, with a 2027 release planned for PS5, XBOX Series, and PC.
