XBOX may end up laying off fewer people than expected

Last July, Microsoft announced its plan to cut 3,200 jobs during the current fiscal year. As a result, 1,600 layoffs were finalized this summer and 268 this week. However, the American company is not expected to reach its initially announced target.

According to Windows Central reporter Jez Corden, the total number of layoffs "will be lower than the previous estimate". It seems these won't reach the 3,200 mark. Corden says Xbox has instead opted for a major restructuring and the transfer of certain employees to other departments within the company.

To avoid layoffs, Microsoft also chose to sell or divest assets such as Double Fine Productions, Undead Labs, and Compulsion Games. These studios subsequently had to lay off employees, but that was no longer within Xbox’s purview. Matt Booty, the company’s chief content officer, stated that his teams have "completed about three-quarters" of the planned restructuring. Thus, we can expect further layoffs.
