Gamers are calling for a PlayStation blackout starting August 23

Once again, the controversy surrounding the discontinuation of physical PlayStation discs starting in January 2028 is making headlines. A protest movement is expected to be launched by gamers in the coming hours.

In fact, online activists are inviting PlayStation users to participate in a big blackout of the brand’s services from August 23 to 30, 2026. The organizers are asking participants to refrain from turning on their consoles for a full week or to log out of their PSN accounts.

"We are calling on PlayStation players to participate in an economic and gameplay blackout from Sunday, August 23 to Sunday, August 30. Players can participate by turning off their consoles or logging out for seven days.

We feel this period gives publishers and developers minimal impact while still giving players a voice."

This action, the scale of which will likely be difficult to gauge, has very little chance of prompting a response from Sony. So far, the Japanese company has turned a deaf ear to criticism of its new business strategy.
