Tencent's Last Sentinel is reportedly being rebooted after six years of development

Lightspeed LA's Last Sentinel was announced at The Game Awards in December 2023 and appears to have been in development hell for a while now.

In a new video, Bloomberg reporter Jason Schreier has revealed that the project’s development has reportedly been rebooted after six years of work. This narrative-driven, open-world action game set in a cyberpunk universe has already cost several hundred million dollars.

After multiple delays, staff departures, and rising production costs, Last Sentinel underwent a playtest earlier this year. The feedback was reportedly extremely negative, and Tencent executives were said to be dissatisfied with the result. In the end, the devs got an ultimatum to improve the game.

Following another presentation in July, Tencent reportedly decided to abandon the project in its current form and lay off approximately 80 people at Lightspeed LA. Development is reportedly still underway, but the game has apparently changed drastically from the version shown in 2023. The ambition to make Last Sentinel an even higher-quality title than GTA has been significantly scaled back.
