Valve is testing generative AI to complete dialogues in a game

Erik Wolpaw is a respected figure in the video game industry, having served as a writer on Half-Life 2 and Portal. In an interview with MinnMax, he revealed that Valve is currently experimenting with generative AI.

According to him, there is no need to fear that artificial intelligence will replace humans in the creative writing process.

"We’ve really experimented a lot with this. And just like with art, there are a lot of questions surrounding it, but I don’t think it’s going to allow us to write novels that are better than those written by humans anytime soon."

He also notes that AI could help generate in-game dialogue based on the player’s current context. According to Wolpaw, a title like Left 4 Dead would benefit from this when a specific event is triggered. Writers would then no longer need to simulate the characters’ reactions to these scripts.

For now, Valve is simply "tapping into the subject" and has not yet fully adopted AI into its creative process.
