Stop Killing Games has nearly 1.3 million valid signatures
, by Thibaut
The official count of the Stop Killing Games petition took place this weekend. Of the million signatures required, the European citizens' initiative validated 1.294 million. This represents an invalidity rate of around 11%, as 1.45 million signatures had been collected.
The European Parliament will now be able to address the sensitive issue of the alleged planned obsolescence of video games when their servers are shut down. The aim is to encourage the Parliament to pass a law preventing publishers from making some of their titles unplayable.
Of course, obtaining signatures does not mean that a legislative framework will necessarily be put in place. The European Parliament and the European Commission will first have to discuss the matter.
