Tencent says it does not interfere with the creative side of its studios' games
, by Thibaut
In just a few years, Tencent has acquired several studios and companies specializing in video games. In an interview with Bloomberg, Michelle Liu, president of the Chinese firm's gaming division, explained her role.
For example, with Funcom, Tencent provided advice to refocus the developers' efforts. As a result, the Norwegian studio focused entirely on Dune: Awakening and shut down The Outsiders (Metal Hellsinger). The group also encouraged Sumo Group to abandon the production of new licenses and remain a support studio. As for Techland (Dead Island), Tencent provided on-site support by assigning members of its teams to discuss the pricing strategy for Dying Light: The Beast.
Finally, Liu made a brief statement describing Tencent's actions with its subsidiaries.
"We refrain from interfering in the creative process. However, creative people don't always know how to manage finances, production, or recruitment."
