New details on Dying Light: Hellruynners, a canceled game by Techland

Between the first Dying Light game released in 2015 and Dying Light 2: Stay Human in 2022, Techland had come up with another concept for its zombie game franchise. Insider Gaming is back with more details about a game called Dying Light: Hellrunners.

As its name suggests, this game was a "runner", meaning a title in which the player's character runs indefinitely through procedurally generated environments. This genre is very popular on mobile devices. The player must dodge traps and enemies and collect items to get as far as possible.

Dying Light: Hellrunners was supposed to use this formula, but Techland had also considered a level-based structure rather than a simple endless run. Zombies and parkour would have also enriched the experience. Of course, this title was ultimately canceled.

Tymon Smektala, director of the Dying Light franchise, discussed the subject.

"We experimented with a Dying Light runner-style game, but after a few prototypes, we realized that there wasn't much we could do to make it stand out or innovate within the genre."

Development was then halted so that the team could focus its efforts on Dying Light 2. Work on Hellrunners never resumed.
