Ubisoft praised the success of Assassin's Creed Shadows despite all controversy

Without going over the whole story again, it should be noted that Assassin's Creed Shadows was the subject of much controversy prior to its launch. This was mainly related to the character of Yasuke and historical inaccuracies.

At Paris Games Week 2025 last week, Ubisoft revisited this turbulent development. Yves Guillemot, CEO of the French publisher, showed a carefully scripted video of the events leading up to the release of Shadows.

Guillemot said he was "surprised by the scale of the attacks" before adding that it was a "battle with our fans, to demonstrate that we were, in fact, more of a video game than a message". The video in question lasted three minutes and its content was reported to Game File.

"In September 2024, we had our backs against the wall, and that's when it clicked. To get out of this situation, we had to stop focusing on those who hated us. We had to rally our allies. So we stopped trying to prove ourselves right and relied on what had carried us for 18 years: the Assassin's Creed brand.*

[...] We moved from promises to proof. Instead of fearing leaks, we presented the game, publishing detailed gameplay footage and letting the experience speak for itself. We opened our doors to creators, media, and fans. We gave them behind-the-scenes access so they could see the talent and expertise our teams were putting into the game. Thousands of resources were produced in just a few weeks.

Thanks to our allies, we regained the confidence to assert our position, take risks, and express ourselves, even in the face of the most virulent detractors. And when Assassin's Creed Shadows was released, thanks to our fans, the tide finally turned in our favor.

However, Game File believes that the video still omits many elements, such as the reasons behind the negative reactions of internet users and the disappointing launch of Star Wars Outlaws, which is said to have had a real impact on the postponement of Assassin's Creed Shadows.

In any case, Assassin's Creed Shadows is coming to Switch 2 on December 2, 2025.
