A former FTC chief slams Microsoft following Game Pass price increase
, by Thibaut
Shortly after Microsoft announced its acquisition of Activision Blizzard in January 2022, the US Federal Trade Commission (FTC) attempted to block the merger. The fight was led by Lina Khan, who was head of the FTC until 2024.
At that time, not so long ago, Khan explained that the acquisition would have negative consequences for consumers. Microsoft, for its part, argued the opposite and promised that Game Pass prices would not increase. We now know who was right...
This week, in a message posted on X, Lina Khan did not hesitate to criticize the American giant following announcements concerning Game Pass.
"Microsoft’s acquisition of Activision has been followed by significant price hikes and layoffs, harming both gamers and developers.
As we’ve seen across sectors, increasing market consolidation and increasing prices often go hand-in-hand.
As dominant firms become too-big-to-care, they can make things worse for their customers without having to worry about the consequences."
