Why is a remake of Residen+t Evil: Code Veronica so needed?

The Resident Evil franchise has never been stronger since its inception on PlayStation in 1996. While it continues to shine with new episodes that have taken significant turns, such as the switch to first-person perspective since the seventh installment, the ninth, titled Resident Evil Requiem, is expected in February 2026.

At the same time, Capcom isn't stopping there and is revamping the classics of the saga, as was the case with Resident Evil 2, the most criticized, Resident Evil 3, because of the missing parts compared to the original, and, more recently, Resident Evil 4. This series of remakes allows new players to discover the universe and older players to rediscover it in a new light thanks to the current capabilities of the RE Engine.

Resident Evil: Code Veronica Remake at the heart of fans' expectations

If you follow the news, especially on Instant Gaming News, you may have seen numerous rumors circulating over the past few months about a new remake in the works at Capcom, featuring an episode that is very popular with fans of the franchise. We are, of course, talking about Resident Evil: Code Veronica.

This game first saw the light of day for the Dreamcast back in 2000, and then came to the PlayStation 2 and GameCube under the name Resident Evil: Code Veronica X with better graphics, some reworked music, additional combat scenes and ninte minutes of extra cutscenes for a richer story. Upoin its release, it caused quite the stir.

Firstly, because it represented a real step forward in technical terms, taking advantage of the possibilities offered by the machines of the time. It was also the first Resident Evil game to feature fully 3D-modeled environments, although the experience remained similar to previous games with a fixed camera.

The title also benefited from a memorable storyline, featuring iconic characters from the saga such as Chris and Claire Redfield and Albert Wesker.

An episode that could win over new players

However, this pivotal episode is not the best known among players and deserves to shine with a new audience that was unable to discover it when it was originally released. Sales of the game on Dreamcast are estimated at 1.14 million copies, while approximately 1.4 million copies were sold on PlayStation 2.

This is a far cry from the figures for Resident Evil 2 on PlayStation, with 4.96 million units sold, or the 3.5 million for Resident Evil 3 on the same console.

Capcom seems to be pulling out all the stops to make the game shine again—at least, that's what renowned insider Dusk Golem has suggested on social media so far.

He explains that Resident Evil: Code Veronica Remake is being handled by the same people who previously worked on the remakes of Resident Evil 2 and Resident Evil 4, and that this famous installment will be treated like a big-budget Resident Evil game in every sense of the word.

However, at the time of writing, the publisher has never officially confirmed the existence of this game. And even if it seems unthinkable that Capcom would stop there with its remakes, other episodes are also expected to receive the same treatment, such as Resident Evil 0.

Furthermore, the same insider suggested that these two titles would be the next to be modernized, even mentioning a release period of 2027/2028, without being able to say which one would be released first.

In any case, the franchise is more stronger than ever and shows no signs of stopping giving us thrills.
