What to Expect from the PlayStation Showcase 2023?
, by Thibaut
We have to go back to September 9, 2021, to witness the last PlayStation Showcase to date. Sony has certainly not failed to quench our thirst with more or less interesting State of Play presentations, but the Japanese manufacturer is finally preparing to make a major statement after almost two years of silence. And needless to say, the expectations are enormous for the show that will be broadcasted this Wednesday, May 24th at 10 PM (9 PM BST / 1 PM PT / 4 PM EDT).
##Likely Announcements from PlayStation Studios
Everyone is waiting for it, and we can't imagine a PlayStation Showcase without it. Marvel's Spider-Man 2 is expected to occupy a significant section of the program with gameplay and, why not, a precise release date. It should be noted that, according to rumors, the launch is expected to take place sometime in September. If Insomniac spends a long time on the web-slinger, it will be unlikely to catch a glimpse of the first snippets of gameplay from Marvel's Wolverine.
Among the highly anticipated PS5 exclusives, we can also mention the multiplayer standalone of The Last of Us Part II. Naughty Dog briefly mentioned it last summer during the Summer Game Fest, and the California-based studio will undoubtedly show us more this week. Furthermore, the second installment could receive an optimization for the PlayStation 5.
Specialized in high-quality remakes (such as Demon's Souls and Shadow of the Colossus), Bluepoint Games might also have something to say. This studio is currently working on a new IP and, quite logically, on another remake. It remains to be seen if one of the two titles will make an appearance.
Finally, among the long-rumored but not yet confirmed projects, we find a new Twisted Metal, whose announcement could coincide with the start of the TV series scheduled for July 27. We can also imagine several projects for the highly anticipated PS VR2.
##Third-party Publishers will be Present
As always, Sony knows how to surround itself with the best studios in the world. Presented last December, Kojima Productions' Death Stranding 2 could make a little appearance at the Showcase. Konami may also make an appearance with the remake of Silent Hill 2 (exclusive to the PS5) and why not with a certain Metal Gear Solid 3 Remake.
Capcom is also among the favorites with the intriguing Pragmata announced in 2020. The remake (yet another one) of Resident Evil 4 could even receive a DLC and/or an update that would add Ada Wong's solo campaign to the game.
Of course, Square Enix will inevitably slip in a trailer for Final Fantasy XVI and maybe even a brief teaser for Final Fantasy VII Rebirth. This second installment is still set to be released during the holiday season.
Lastly, let's be daring, Rockstar Games, which has always been close to Sony, would do well to shine during the Showcase. However, it seems more reasonable to expect an optimization of Red Dead Redemption II for the new generation consoles than a trailer for GTA VI.
##Unlikely Announcements
But with every major conference comes a small dose of dream that crosses our gamer minds. Alongside the fabulous God of War Ragnarök, Santa Monica Studios has been working on a new franchise led by the charismatic Cory Barlog. A teaser could be offered to us.
Several other PlayStation Studios seem capable of presenting a new game. This is the case, for example, with Bend Studio (Days Gone), Sucker Punch (Ghost of Tsushima), or even Guerrilla Games. The Dutch firm is working on a third installment of Horizon and a multiplayer title. We'll have to see if any of these projects will make an appearance.
Finally, we can expect surprises from the indie scene as well as from major third-party publishers. But to find out more, we'll have to wait a few more hours!
