In Japan, Switch 2 game cards are not eligible for preservation

The National Library of Japan has several takss. In particular, it has been responsible for preserving video games in the country since 2000. So far, it has more than 9,600 cartridges and CDs stored under very strict archiving conditions.

This is a highly commendable initiative in an era where digital media has taken precedence over physical. The Famitsu website therefore questioned the institution about the thorny issue of Switch 2 game cards. Although these cards are physical, they only contain a license, and the game must be downloaded in its entirety.

The National Library of Japan explained that these game key cards are not eligible for its preservation initiative.

"Only physical media containing the content itself are considered eligible for preservation. A game key card is not considered content in itself, so it does not fall within our scope for collection and preservation."
