China is considering banning NVIDIA AI chips despite the lack of local alternatives
, by Quentin
According to the Financial Times, China is considering a total ban on NVIDIA AI chips. Beijing criticizes the country for its dependence on American technology and is concerned about potential security flaws in H20 accelerators.
In this context, several Chinese giants have reportedly reduced or even canceled their orders. The authorities are encouraging the use of local alternatives, such as those from Huawei or Cambricon. However, these solutions remain limited and do not yet meet market needs.
Dependence therefore remains high: many AI projects, such as DeepSeek's R2 model, have had to revert to NVIDIA chips after realizing the limitations of domestic options. Beijing nevertheless hopes to see its manufacturers catch up by next year.
