PETA asks Nintendo to change the look of the Cow in Mario Kart World
, by Thibaut
One of the main attractions of Mario Kart World is the ability to play as the Cow, which was previously confined to the Moo Moo Meadows track. However, this addition has not been to everyone's liking.
The animal rights organization PETA has asked Nintendo to change the appearance of this famous cow. The issue is the ring worn by the animal on its nose, which PETA says is "a painful reminder of the cruelty suffered by cows in the meat and dairy industries". Without going into too much detail, this ring does indeed cause pain and discomfort to the animal. It is even sometimes used on calves to prevent them from suckling their mothers.
While Mario Kart World is obviously just a game, PETA says it wants to remain vigilant about the representation of animals in all forms of entertainment.
"We know that Mario Kart World is just a game, and that's precisely why the Cow's nose ring must go. Mario Kart is supposed to be a fun escape. No one wants to think about animal suffering while racing around a track."
It remains to be seen whether Nintendo will heed this request. In the past, PETA has already targeted the manufacturer over Animal Crossing. It was criticized for encouraging players to capture animals and display them in a museum.
