Nintendo changes one of its patents during the war against Palworld
, by Thibaut
Nintendo has no intention of leaving Palworld alone. As a reminder, the Japanese company had registered three patents in order to be able to take Pocketpair to court.
Two of these famous patents concern the collection of creatures via a means of capture, and the third focuses on the fluid transition between ground and airborne mounts in-game. It's this last patent that Nintendo has chosen to modify.
To do so, the Japanese firm turned to the Japanese Patent Office, which accepted the brand's request. While "no new technical details" have been added, the wording relating to the document's content has been changed. It is believed that this change is intended to "complicate things" and "putting up a huge smokescreen". This is achieved by adding expressions such as "even when", which are generally infrequent.
It's also quite rare for a litigant to modify a patent in the course of legal proceedings. This may happen if the plaintiff feels that the patent could end up being useless in its original form.
What's more, the changes could let Nintendo go further than with Palworld. The objective here should be to dissuade other companies from making games similar to Pokémon.
