Virtuos (Oblivion Remastered) is about to lay off around 300 staff

Despite the success of The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered and its work on Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater, Virtuos is not immune to redundancies.

Around 7% of the company's workforce, or approximately 300 employees, are to be made redundant. This concerns offices in the USA, Asia, Europe and the three divisions based in France.

According to Gauthier ‘Gautoz’ Andres on Bluesky, 200 people will be made redundant in China. The primary objective is to make the studio remain "competitive" in an increasingly tense market. Virtuos is said to be undergoing a "strategic turnaround", deciding to focus on more ambitious projects such as Oblivion Remastered. The company had previously been a support studio, assisting in the production of some of the big games and making ports.

For Oblivion, Virtuos offered royalty-free contracts to newcomers and even froze raises and reduced the importance of bonuses at the end of development. A strike is currently taking place in the Lyon offices to protest these lay-offs and to "protect the branch's future capacity for action".
