Sea of Thieves will undergo major changes

Rare has showcased what's to come for Sea of Thieves in a live community event. Several aspects of the game will be overhauled and major new features introduced too.

The first big thing is undoubtedly the arrival of custom servers in early 2026. On these servers, players will be able to disable events such as storms, kraken attacks and much more. We'll also be able to choose the number of pirates per ship, generate items and even select a free cinematic camera. Players will be able to create their own stories, even making little films in their own right.

A trailer has also been revealed for Season 17, which will add additional caches, objects and events over three months. Season 18, called Devil's Roar, has even been teased already, and it will rework the Emissary system in particular

For the rest, the insider program has been overhauled, with the removal of the confidentiality clause for testers and the addition of polls. Finally, the season structure itself will be modified. Initially, each season will introduce new gameplay mechanics, followed by a temporary community event, and finally a section to enrich content already present in Sea of Thieves.
