The Nintendo Switch 2 could support VRR while in the dock, but it could prove difficult to deploy

Digital Foundry believes that the Nintendo Switch 2 could technically support VRR in docked mode. The stumbling block isn't the dock itself, but the conversion from DisplayPort to HDMI via USB-C, something similar to what happens with the Steam Deck. Tests have shown that the dock can handle VRR, but technical complications make integration complex. Such a function would require a simple, automatic system, difficult to achieve in this case.

As for games, Digital Foundry explains that few launch titles offer a 40 FPS mode, despite the 120 Hz screen. There are only a few that do so far, such as Cyberpunk 2077. Without VRR enhancements, this mode would remain little used, as it would require strict locking at 40 FPS for a stable experience.
