The future of esports competitions Call of Duty and Overwatch could be threatened

Two of the biggest esports leagues in the world are in danger. Indeed, Activision has recently spoken out about the concerning situation in which the Call of Duty and Overwatch competitions find themselves, to the point that a hypothetical disappearance in the near future is not excluded.

"Our collaboration agreements for our professional esports leagues (namely the Overwatch League and the Call of Duty League) continue to face headwinds that have a negative impact on operations and, potentially, the longevity of the leagues within the current economic model. We continue to work to address these challenges, which could result in significant costs, and these efforts may prove unsuccessful."

This is due to audiences, which are decent but struggle to increase over the editions. The extremely high participation fees demanded of teams also do a lot of harm to both leagues.
