The XDefiant producer is leaving the gaming industry
, by Thibaut
XDefiant is now a thing of the past, as its servers closed on June 3. A sad end for Ubisoft's competitive shooter, which never fully convinced gamers.
In a long message published on X, Mark Rubin, executive producer of XDefiant, thanked players before announcing that he was leaving the video game industry. He says he wants to refocus on his family, and also wishes the best to the game's team, who were made redundant last year.
Among the problems encountered after the launch of XDefiant, Rubin points to the fact that it failed to attract new players. He also mentions the use of an engine that wasn't suited to what the developers were trying to do. This resulted in “a crippling tech debt" and the team didn't have the technical resources to correct it.
Numerous netcode problems also cropped up. So, while the experience ran smoothly for those with a solid network connection, players with the slightest irregularity in their connection experienced hell on XDefiant. The engine was unable to handle network inconsistencies.
All this led to the downfall of XDefiant, which is now no longer playable.
