A gamer has created a fused cable to prevent his RTX 4090 from overheating

Faced with the problem of melted connectors on RTX 4090s, a Reddit user has designed a custom cable equipped with individual fuses for each 12V line. In the event of an overvoltage, the relevant fuse blows, preventing overheating. This homemade system is not recommended, but illustrates users' efforts to overcome a known defect.

Some offer re-settable fuses to avoid repeated outages. Others go even further: one user has soldered the power supply wires directly to the board's PCB, doing away with the connector altogether - a quite extreme and risky method.

ASUS offers a safer alternative on its high-end RTX 5090s via the Power Detector+ function, which detects current imbalances.

For the general public, there are solutions such as Thermal Grizzly's WireView which allow real-time monitoring of current and temperature.
