Randy Pitchford says “true fans” will pay $80 for Borderlands 4

Gearbox boss Randy Pitchford has said that "true fans" would be willing to pay $80 for Borderlands 4 if that was the price set. This reaction follows a comment on social networks where an Internet user hoped the game wouldn't cost that much.
Pitchford clarified that the pricing decision was not up to him, but compared the situation to his own past: he had managed to afford Starflight for $80 in 1991, while working for minimum wage. He believes that a true fan will "find a way" to buy the game, even at that price.
His comments have been widely criticized, particularly for the discrepancy between today's economic realities and those of the 1990s. Some point out that purchasing power has clearly declined, and access to games is no longer the same.
The debate about $80 games is becoming increasingly heated, as several publishers, including Nintendo and Microsoft, plan to go for this price point for certain upcoming titles.
