The director of Final Fantasy 11 has revealed that the game was originally scheduled to end in 2024, but player support helped prolong its existence.
In an interview, current director Yoji Fujito explained that Square Enix was considering stopping the game after the Voracious Resurgence quest was done back in 2024.
"There was a real possibility that 2024 would be the year when updates would end, with a switch to maintenance mode where only technical aspects would be maintained", Fujito clarified.
Despite outdated servers, players continued to connect and pay the monthly subscription of $11.95, in place since 2002. In view of this enthusiasm, the development team decided to keep the game active.
"We thought that if Voracious Resurgence ended and the game lost momentum, we might have to consider ending it. But that didn't happen," added Fujito.
As a result, Square Enix has announced further updates, including a high-level battlefield, controller tweaks, a morale gauge, race modifications for characters and additional content for the Limbus combat system.
