Mergers and acquisitions in the gaming sector will reach $6.6 billion by 2025

While lay-offs and studio closures are frequently in the news, takeovers are also very prominent.
According to the latest figures, mergers and acquisitions accounted for $6.6 billion in the first quarter of 2025. This is the highest level for a quarter in over a year. This total was mainly boosted by the mobile games sector, with Scopely acquired Niantic Games for $3.5 billion last March.
However, the frequency of acquisitions has fallen sharply since the third quarter of 2022, which marked the end of the COVID-19 pandemic. Between the first quarter of 2020 and the second quarter of 2022, acquisitions and mergers totaled $78.1 billion.
From Q3 2022 to Q1 2025, this figure rises to $35.5 billion, without taking into account the deal between Microsoft and Activision Blizzard. Totalling at $68.7 billion, this buyout is almost considered an anomaly.
