Despite the release of the Switch 2 in June, Nintendo has no plans to abandon the first one

Nintendo won't simply draw a line under the 150 million Switch units sold worldwide. Indeed, while the Switch 2 will be released on June 5, its big sister won't be disappearing just yet.

With games like Metroid Prime 4: Beyond and Pokémon Legends: Z-A, Switch players will still have something to enjoy in 2025. Nintendo of America CEO Doug Bowser has made it clear that his company has no intention of burying its golden goose this year.

"We have over 150 million Switch units installed worldwide. We'll probably announce more on May 8, at our next financial results conference call. We want to keep these players engaged. Not everyone may be ready to upgrade to Switch 2."

"Hopefully, with time and our good games, they'll want to switch to Nintendo Switch 2. We know there's a portion of consumers who will be absolutely ready from day one to join this new platform."
