China faces shortage of NVIDIA H20 AI chips

NVIDIA's H20 AI GPUs, designed for the Chinese market, are running out of stock in the face of growing demand. Tencent has reportedly acquired a large quantity of these chips for an estimated amount of tens of billions of yuan, in order to integrate AI functionalities into its services. The release of DeepSeek's AI models also reinforces the need for computing power.

According to Omdia, Tencent and ByteDance will have purchased around 230,000 NVIDIA AI chips by 2024, making China a key market for the company. The H20 is said to sell for around 100,000 yuan each, a price deemed competitive with local alternatives such as the Ascend 910B. NVIDIA's software ecosystem remains an asset for Chinese companies.
