France has imposed a heavy fine on site hosting pirated Nintendo games

The French Court of Cassation ruled in Nintendo's favor this week. In April 2023, the French courts ordered Dstorage SAS to pay €442,750 in damages and €27,000 in legal fees to the Japanese manufacturer.

At the time, Dstorage SAS was accused of hosting pirated games without attempting to block or remove them from its 1fichier.com site. Rather than accept the judgement, the now convicted company chose to appeal, and then to appeal to the French Supreme Court.

In the end, the Court of Cassation upheld the judgment. As a result, all French and European sites hosting pirated game files must take steps to remove them. Otherwise, they will have to pay compensation to the rights holders of these games.

Nintendo welcomed the decision, saying it was "satisfied with the court's decision establishing Dstorage's liability."
