It's official! SEGA is buying Rovio, the studio behind the Angry Birds franchise

The week starts with a new acquisition in the video game industry. This time, it's SEGA making the move by announcing its intention to acquire Rovio Entertainment Oyj. The transaction will amount to 706 million euros (approximately 1 billion dollars) and is expected to be completed during the second quarter of the 2024 financial year.

If SEGA has put its hand in its wallet to acquire the Finnish studio, it's because the latter has real expertise in the field of mobile gaming. Indeed, Rovio is behind the famous Angry Birds franchise. This market has become essential, and major manufacturers like Sony or Microsoft (with the acquisition of Activision Blizzard King) are pulling out all the stops to get a piece of the action. So, it's not surprising to see SEGA trying its luck.
