Sumo Digital is to become just a support studio in order to continue operating
, by Thibaut
Bought out by Tencent in July 2021, Sumo Digital is in dire straits and needs to review its development strategy if it is to survive this rough period for the industry.
It's because of this that the studio behind Snake Pass, Sackboy: A Big Adventure and Team Sonic Racing will stop working on its own licenses. Instead, the British company will support third-party projects by contributing its expertise in various fields.
This decision was taken with the aim of "balance our creative ambitions and the commercial realities to ensure the long-term stability and success of our business", with further details coming at a later date.
"Whether collaborating on new or established games, co-developing games, providing specialist engineering, or porting services; we are confident in our teams’ exceptional talent and our ability to thrive in this next chapter."
According to Video Games Chronicle, Sumo Digital got several original projectsin development, but they have probably all been cancelled. While the studio's directors promise to minimize the impact of this new strategy, they also point out that there will be redundancies in the coming weeks.
