Microsoft is working on better integration of Xbox and Windows for portables

According to Jason Ronald, vice president of the Next Generation division, Microsoft plans to bring the Xbox and Windows experiences closer together on portable devices as early as this year. During an event by AMD and Lenovo, he explained that the aim is to integrate innovations developed for Xbox into the Windows and portable gaming devices ecosystem.

Ronald admitted that Windows is far from optimized for portable devices. Gamers often have to make do with an interface that is ill-suited to use without a M&K, such as the lack of native support for joysticks. The company is hard at work on interaction models to simplify the experience and make it more fluid, putting players and their games at the center.

Unlike a simple conversion of the Xbox OS to Windows, Microsoft wants to make Windows better for gaming, all while hiding problematic elements such as the desktop or taskbar. The company has tried "compact modes" before, but Ronald stresses that the aim is to make the interface more gaming-oriented.

We'll know more before the year ends, all marking a step towards a better portable gaming experience on Windows.
